I am almost at my limit. Frustrated and still trying to figure out WHY we (the big we) cannot figure out how to educate our kids or maybe we just do not know how to FUND our kids education! But I do know it can't ALL be the fault of the teachers...really! So as Valentine's Day approaches, show your love of education and specifically your kids teachers!

The teachers at J.S. Jenks in Chestnut Hill deserve a standing ovation for continuing to provide a quality education while all the drama of the district, the state swirls around them.

First in Math

At J.S. Jenks the students have the opportunity to play a mathbased computer game First in Math (© 2011 Suntex International Inc) http://www.firstinmath.com/.The program is played in schools all over the country. Students earn stickers and awards as theycomplete levels of math. Students progress through addition, subtraction,multiplication and division; there are even word problems and sudokugames. It is the modern version of flashcards. The contemporary advantage ofFirst in Math is that the kids cannot advance until they master a section. Wow,learning to try again until succeeding, what an appropriate skill for thefuture. The program also teaches studentsan international language that they must master if we as a country are to begincompeting in science again. Thecompetition portion of the game has perks as well, such as learning how to losegracefully or keeping focus to catch up to your colleagues. In my opinion First in Math is a greataddition to the school curriculum and will prepare our kids for their verytechnical future.

We're Making Music!

My youngest (Kid 2) has just started kindergarten at JSJenks, so I now have a second child in the same school with the samekindergarten teacher as my eldest (Kid 1). However the accommodation, acclimation and behavior between the childrenwere very different. Yet the result isequally positive; a happy child who is learning to be adaptable in a newenvironment and learning much.

One example is the experience of Kid 2 in music class. WhenI observed him in a monthly “Wee Sing” event, where parents come to class withtheir children, he was fidgety and a bit of an “attention-seeker”. I am surehis behavior is not entirely different when I am not present. However, he hasabsorbed the lessons of the class. Ilearned this when my partner and I were frequently asked to attend “school” athome. Kid 2 would introduce himself as “Mr. G-Y”, grab his guitar and class begins.He sings and then we have to follow and join in. He stops class if we are notfollowing properly; he wants us to learn the songs. He sings, wants to play music and isbasically excited for school each day. Thanks Mr. Kell!! And all the facultyand staff at J.S. Jenks.

The positives of the SDP (being a SIMBY)

Spring and summer were a chaotic time in the School District of Philadelphia (SDP). Budget cuts from Harrisburg, testifying at both City Council and the School Reform Commission (SRC) kept parents, teachers and supporters very busy. Teacher layoffs and the resignation of Dr. Ackerman as Superintendent provided much anxiety prior to the start of the school year.

However, through the chaos, my resolve to stay in the district increased as I met amazing, smart and dedicated people adovocating for our city's public schools. And if we don't, who will. So in the age of NIMBY (Not in my backyard) or "moving to find a better backyard", I am a SIMBY. I will "stay in my backyard" and contribute to and advocate for my neighborhood schools.

Evening with the Arts

Wow did I see a great show last evening. Complete with an art show and music including strings, choir, concert band and bucket drums (my personal favorite). The children involved numbered more than 100 (almost a quarter of the school) and I am not including the wee sing group (our Kindergarten choir). The art and music instruction is exceptional. Ms. Fisher put on a spectacular art show.

The concert portion of the evening was wonderful. The children are talented and the music instruction is fabulous and includes Mr. Wesner (Strings), Mr. Franchetti (Concert Band), Mr. Kell (Choir), Mr. Leland (Select Voices and the JAM program) and Mr. Chuong (Bucket Drums).

What private school puts on this spectacular event you ask. Well it is our local neighborhood public school which is actually not very well funded but what a product. Thanks to the administration, faculty, staff, parents and the students.

So help support the future of OUR city. Come to the Rally for Education at the Trolley Car Diner on Sunday May 15th at 1:00 PM.

Message: Cooperation, cool heads and innovation can result in change.

Setting: Cold, snowy and dreary January

Problem: Indoor recess consisting of no outdoor time and movies (not an issue to some parents but a huge concern to others- beauty of a diverse community)
Resolution: Before the issue continued to escalate and became an insurmountable problem, parents came together and discussed the issue at a Home and School Association (HSA) board meeting. Three parents then met with administration. During the conversation the topic of bobcats coming in and removing snow from the playground (blacktop) was mentioned, at first the idea seemed unfeasible but the idea then developed and a tentative plan of action was made. The issues discussed in the meeting were then reported back to other parents and within hours resourceful first grade parent, Stephanie Mayes, had coordinated the rental of a bobcat. The next day first grade parent, David Mednick (within hours) cleared the playground of snow. Over the weekend there was a bit of a thaw so more parents armed with shovels moved the slush and snow piles that might result in ice buildup on the playground. Monday AM came and the kids had morning announcements outside and then outdoor recess for two days UNTIL…..the extremely cold weather returned.

The kids may still have indoor recess but we are well prepared for when the warmer weather arrives. Thanks to everyone who made this possible!

Memory of Last Year, The Day Before 2nd Grade

The memory of last year that sticks out in my mind, aside from the fact that Alex had a great year both socially and academically, was the painting of the playground.
An event that really exemplified school community. We had many families and kids going beyond the call of duty and putting in hours of work! At the end of the day, we created the world.
A lesson in organization, patience and geography. All who participated were happy to have it done but I think we all enjoyed the time we spent together as a Jenks' family.

I received a wonderful email from a J.S. Jenks Alumna recounting a memory from her years at the school......

Hi
I just wanted to write to say that I LOVE your blog about Jenks.

I attended Jenks from '84 to '91 before transferring to Masterman for 7th-12th grades. It was a wonderful experience for me. Sometime in 4th or 5th grade my mother thought I should visit some of the local single-sex private schools to see if I wouldn't be interested in a different type of classroom environment. It was an interesting experience, but the thing that stands out for me is that I had the opportunity to take a math test with the rest of the class at Springside and it covered material that we had finished far earlier in the year. I was the only student to get 100%. That, and my indignation at the befuddled expressions of private school parents when they found out that a bright little girl like me went to Jenks, kept me in the public system through my senior year.

I am so glad to know that Jenks continues to be a shining example of what a public school can be. You are doing a great service for the school and the community that has often overlooked it.

The 2009 Annual Report for the Philadelphia Public Schools is now available on the district website http://webgui.phila.k12.pa.us/offices/a/accountability/school-annual-reports
Download from the Northwest group. We are consistently in the top 25% of schools (they only segment by quartiles).

There is a new index from the Office of Accountability that was introduced with the plan for the Renaissance Schools. The School Performance Index (SPI)is calculated using a different algorithm to compare schools 1. Relative to the District Overall and

We are in the 2 ranking, the top 20% of all schools. And ranked 4 among like schools. The SPI page allows comparison of scores etc to similar schools in the area.

Jenks' Parents and the SRC

Meetings are a regular part of my "day job". So when it was suggested that we gather a group of parents to attend the School Reform Council meeting in January, I was supportive but not enthusiastic. I am sure other parents also felt the same way about yet another meeting....BUT J.S. Jenks really made an impact. We had 9 parents support our 3 parent speakers. Many more parents were supportive but unable to attend an afternoon meeting.

The meeting was delayed and relatively long but from my vantage point well worth the effort. We had a spectacular team of parents speaking for the school an in particular regarding a proposal submitted by the principal last March. Gerald Wright, Bob Previdi and Julia Reeb were articulate, passionate and to the point. Although the outcome is yet to be known, we captured the attention of the SRC council, Dr. Ackerman, the Regional Superintendent, Penny Nixon and a recruit for the “potential parents” list-serv.

I really have not felt so good after a "meeting" in a very long time:)

I have found that sending my daughter to school can be difficult, confusing and basically scary at times. There is always angst and self doubt about decisions made. In addition, I struggle with juggling my own goals and professional life as I try to support my children in their lives. No wonder I am tired!

As the J.S. Jenks annual Thanksgiving feast approached I thought about what I am thankful for regarding the school.

I am thankful that….

1. My daughter is happy and learning new things each day
2. My daughter feels part of the school community
3. I am able to walk my kids to school many days
4. I can raise my children in an urban neighborhood†

Below are the scores for J.S. Jenks’ PSSA scores in reading and math.
We are in the 1st quartile in math for the 5th grade which is the top 20% of schools (only quartile stats for 5th grade were given). All grades are high in math and there were large gains in reading scores for the past 3 years (One area parents can definitely make an impact: Read to/with your kids!)

Potential Jenks' Parents

There are many positive things happening in school! The feeling is reflected in both test scores and parent comments on the Great Schools website.

Jenks ranked #2 in terms of positive gains for 5th grade math last year. That grade was also 89% proficient in math, a great distance from the average of 40-50% for Philly public schools.

Below are some directions on transfer forms and the process:

If you are interested in considering Jenks and are outside of the
Catchment Zone, you need to fill out a "Volunteer Transfer Form"
available from the Philadelphia School District site website:

The deadline to fill out a form is October 30th.

The principal from your local (catchment) school will need to sign
this form, and then a copy of the form needs to be given to Jenks (or
any other schools you may want to list) to keep on file. It is
recommended that you hand deliver the form to the Philadelphia
district office to ensure it actually gets there.

This form has to be on file at the school district in order for you to
be eligible for a transfer. Transfers are by lottery and many
families do not actually receive a transfer through the district.
However, the Jenks principal has a certain amount of discretion in
accepting transfers, so, as long as you have your transfer form in,
she can place you on a waiting list and potentially accept you to the
school even if the lottery transfer does not come through.

Here is a list of things that you should consider doing if you are
interested in a transfer:

1. Fill out the Voluntary Transfer Form
2. Arrange to meet with the J.S. Jenks principal, Ms. Lynskey (call
the main office; come for a tour on the 1st monday of the month,
etc..)
3. Wait until you receive your notification about the transfer from
the district (usually in March or April). If you get in by lottery,
you are set. If not, go back and talk to Ms. Lynskey.

The Principal: Mary Lynsky is starting her 2nd year as principal, she is implementing new programs and continues to expand and support the great programs thatwere in place when she arrived last year.

Welcome Back

Wow! Already 2 weeks into the new year and it looks as if it will be as good a year as Kindergarten. Many changes and now we have spelling tests! More reading and again the 100 Book Challenge. All the specialist options are back, computers, music, art and PE. We start the day out on the playground this year, a change I was not looking forward to but it is fun. The kids get a chance to burn off a bit of energy before the start of the day.

We will be hosting a series of "Kindergarten Teas" this fall and spring for families that are interested in learning more about J.S. Jenks. Please note the change of place this year.

Our kindergarten year has ended and we had a great time. My daughter thrived, learned and became part of the Jenks' community.

What a special night. The production of The Life & Music of Hans Christian Anderson was spectacular. Children ranging from Kindergarten to 8th grade participated.

Thank you Ms. Williams for a special night and all your efforts with our kids.

First in Math:

We had lots of fun using First in Math, a web based math program that schools all over the nation utilize. It helped my daughter with money counting and telling time. I was also impressed that these kids will have no problems taking professional tests in the future since the are used to problem solving on the computer at such a young age.

J.S. Jenks did well nation-wide (25th) and in the state (14th) and we started in October this year. New codes come out in August so lets get ready for a fun First in Math 2009-10. (click on images to enlarge)

Ronnie Polaneczky: Why not a public-school parent for SRC slot?

WHILE WE'VE been distracted by talk of a trash tax, swimming-pool closures and library shutdowns, four of the School Reform Commission's seats have quietly gone up for grabs.

The terms of Heidi Ramirez, Martin Bednarek and SRC chairwoman Sandra Dungee Glenn have expired. All have agreed to stay put for now, and have said that they'd like to be re-appointed.

The fourth commissioner, Jim Gallagher, has already left.

Kevin Peter is hoping one of those seats will be his, if he can convince the mayor or governor to appoint him.

So far, neither has invited him in for a sit-down. But I think they should - and not just because Kevin's a public-school parent (only one SRC member - Denise Armbrister - actually has kids in the city's public schools).

But because, extraordinarily, Kevin Peter has helped convince 75 middle-class families to choose Philadelphia public education for their children.

That's probably 75 more families than any SRC member has enticed into using a city school.

The development director at Community Legal Services, Kevin, 44, lives in Mount Airy with his wife, Nancy, and their son, Ben, whose education was on their minds back in 2002.

They were wondering where to enroll Ben for kindergarten and were curious about their neighborhood elementary school, C.W. Henry.

"A lot of people would either move to the suburbs when their kids were ready for school, or they'd do private school - even though they'd never even checked out Henry," says Kevin, who has also worked in community relations, philanthropy and fundraising for nonprofits.

Determined to separate truth about the school from myth, the Peters held meetings in their home, where Henry parents and staff answered questions from local non-Henry parents. Along with a handful of other families, the Peters chose Henry, which they found to be a dynamic, inviting place.

They've since become rabid Henry and public-school advocates, continuing their monthly gatherings for parents curious about local education options.

Kevin has co-chaired a committee that worked with six public schools in Chestnut Hill and Mount Airy to rally support and resources for the schools.

And his blog, "Knowing Henry," has become a must-read for prospective Henry parents wanting honest information about the benefits and drawbacks of public education.

As a result of these efforts, 75 families have chosen Henry.

This is huge.

Studies show that schools with 50 percent or more of children from middle-class families are 24 times more likely to outperform schools with students from mostly poor families.

That's because middle-class parents' involvement profoundly impacts a school's environment, explains Richard Kahlenberg, author of All Together Now: Creating Middle Class Schools Through Public School Choice.

They're four times more likely than low-income families to belong to PTAs. They tend to set high academic standards for their kids, so their kids tend to work hard - which adds to classroom rigor.

And their kids tend to have fewer behavioral problems than low-income kids.

So, schools that are economically well-integrated become places where teachers spend more time instructing, less time disciplining. So, they stay put longer- contributing to school stability.

"This isn't elitist or anecdotal," says Kahlenberg. "It's based on solid research," which also shows that low-income students perform better alongside peers who are middle-class.

Kevin admits that he's not an "A-list" candidate for an SRC appointment - SRC members have had deep business, finance, education or political connections - but he notes that those connections haven't put the district in the black, designed a sustainable fiscal program or turned the district into an efficient, successful organization.

"So, maybe the A-listers and their A-list networks aren't bringing the right things to the table," says Kevin (whose resumé is on Mayor Nutter's desk).

What he has proven that he can bring, he says, are parents with resources, networks and motivation to work with schools and administrators to improve the education experience for all kids.

"How many SRC members have brought their peers into the schools?" he asks. "When was the last time any SRC member encouraged Philadelphians to consider sending their children to their neighborhood school?"

The way that he has, successfully, at least 75 times?

Like I said, I think the guy deserves a sit-down. *

Fhew I am tired… but spring is springing at Jenks

What a great winter for the kindergarten.

They have been busy reading and journaling. The morning journal sessions are wonderful to experience. It is fun to hang out and read their sentences…very interesting and entertaining.

They have also been very involved in charitable causes….a jump-a-thon for the American Heart Association, a math-a-thon for St. Judes, collecting pennies for schools in Afganistan.

They have had assemblies on topics including Fire Safety and the 76ers’ Read to Achieve. There was Career Day and Literacy Week which brought authors, illustrators and grandparents to the school.

The kids exchanged valentines and celebrated Dr. Suess’s Birthday. They are able to buy pretzels on Tuesday’s and Friday’s and the Market Place (Weaver’s Way) comes on Thursdays. Many families enjoyed Jenks’ Day at the Chestnut Grill, coming again on April 21^st.

A very busy winter….. now as the kids start to shed their jackets you can see them begin to look and act like first graders.

And coming soon…..Pi Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Fire Fighter Honor Assembly, Spring Scholastic Book Fair and the first day of Spring.

Doldrums or Winter Wonderland: It is all Perspective

The middle of winter and the Groundhog did not see his shadow, enough to make any California native very depressed. And then I hear the yelling and screaming and fighting and playing and am forced to see things from another perspective; the six (almost) and three year old perspective.

Six inches of snow is very cool, a day off school is good but we still spend the day discussing our classmates and daily routines. This is the perspective of a person who embraces each day, enjoys her classmates, enjoys her teachers especially her new student teacher (thank you Miss Megan) and just basically gets what we adults do not….life is good and exciting and offers continued opportunities to learn…even when it is 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Reading in Kindergarten...looks like such fun!!!
My daughter is reading well and the 100 book challenge has motivated her. Although I believe her greatest motivation is the other kids in her class. They motivate and challenge each other. The 100 Book Challenge has its roots in Philadelphia region and it was first used by Jane Hileman, CEO and Founder of the American Reading Company, in a suburban Philadelphia school. Ms. Tish's class had 3 children who read over 300 books the first marking term.

My favorite reading aid is The King of "ing". Wouldn't it be great if we continued to have such fun learning.

It is interesting. I encourage all Jenks' families to visit the site and submit reviews. 2008 was a good year for the school and the scores in Math seem to be consistently strong. Reviewing the scores did make me reflect on the variables that may affect the scores in any one year... teacher changes, administration and of course parents. I have control over my positive involvement in the school and I will continue to support and improve our school in any way I can.

After School: What are the options in Chestnut Hill?

On days I am “parent pick-up” there is always lots of activity at the Jenks Playground (The Children’s Park). Moms, Dads, Grandparents, care givers all watching their kids expend some energy. This is a nice time to connect with others at the school and create a sense of community. Those parent pick-up days are very special for me, but our daily requirements are typically a need for care after school hours. For us, it was an easy choice to send our daughter to Christ Lutheran Child Care Center after-school program, our son is in preschool there. I love that our daughter gets to play in the playground for at least 45 minutes to an hour after school. Then they head over to the center for some “homework” time. An easy “one stop shop” solution for our family.

But there are other options in the neighborhood. Many kindergarteners head to the Water Tower Recreation Center but below are even more options. One not mentioned below are the new clubs that are offered to the Jenks’ students. Size Matters

I was recently asked the class size in kindergarten at Jenks and when I said my daughter’s class was 21 with a student teacher, the individual was shocked. It was thought that class sizes were around 30. As far as I can tell the districts' limit is 30 in younger grades but both K classes at Jenks are under 20 (we had a few students move recently).

Furthermore, Dr. Ackerman has reduced class size to 22 for K-3 in the “Empowerment Schools” http://www.phila.k12.pa.us/offices/ceo/ackerman/classsize_reduction.html.

From my perspective class size does not seem to be an issue at Jenks. Although class size should always be a consideration and parents should be aware of changes within the district and the school.

I also think there is a lower limit (although I am not sure what that number is), kids seem to love to work together and learn quite a lot from “peer mentoring”. If discipline is not an issue, lots of kids seem to produce a creative environment. I also think that kids need to learn to work alone and try to figure out problems. Trying a solution and failing is not a bad thing to learn in school, as long as there is follow-up and encouragement to try another solution.

I am very happy with the classroom environment at Jenks thus far.

Princeton University
According to Alan Krueger of Princeton University, who served as chief economist for the U.S. Department of Labor in the Clinton administration, lowering class sizes in Tennessee narrowed the achievement gap between Blacks and Whites by 38 percent.

Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching
In a four-point plan to ensure that all children are educated to their full potential, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching President Ernest L. Boyer called for reducing class size to "no more than 15 students per teacher" for the early elementary grades.

National Association of Elementary School Principals
The NAESP has revised its class size policy statement from a student-teacher ratio of 20 to 1 down to recommending a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1.

Department of Education
According to the U.S. Department of Education, "A growing body of research demonstrates that students attending small classes in the early grades make more rapid educational progress than students in larger classes, and that these achievement gains persist well after students move on to larger classes in later grades."

Given the strong support of parents and teachers — and the demonstrated effectiveness of smaller classes —Americans should urge their elected representatives at all levels to support continued class size reduction. It's education reform that works!

Philadelphia Museum of Art --> November 14, 2008

The Jenks Kindergarten took a trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I did not have the pleasure of going on the trip but here are some of the highlights as told by my daughter.

They visited China and U.S.A and Philadelphia. Her favorite piece from the China collection was the “Blue Dog House” or actually known as the Dog Cage (Goulong) from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Qianlong Period (1736-1795), 1736-95.

Another favorite from the trip was the Staircase Group (Portrait of Raphaelle Peale and Titian Ramsey Peale) which was Made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, 1795.

Needless to say, fun was had by all and an appreciation of the museum at this age can’t be a bad thing.

We're Making Music --> Nov 12, 2008

Wednesday evening the families of Jenks K-4^th grade students were treated to an incredible evening of music. We’re Making Music was a production organized by Ms. Williams, her student teacher Ms. Spencer and accompanist Ms. Pochettino. Ms. Williams said she couldn’t have done it with out the support of the principal, Ms. Lynskey and the other teachers.

That morning my daughter couldn’t contain her excitement. She talked about standing on the risers, the bandanna she needed to bring and was humming all morning. Although she never revealed the “secret” songs that were going to be performed!

And what a surprise it was…a packed house (standing room only) and great music by the kids. The grades sang together and solo and everyone seemed to have a great evening.

We are looking forward to the next Jenks’ event!

One thing that has impressed us at Jenks, aside from the new principal and the excellent teachers and staff are the parents. This Year at Jenks: The beginning

This Year at Jenks is an idea taken from Kevin Peter whose blog “Knowing Henry” has become a source of information for potential and current C.W. Henry School families.

This blog will contain personal observations of Vanessa Yingling, a kindergarten parent at J.S. Jenks, about our first year at Jenks. I hope to provide information that both current and potential parents may find helpful.

As the feeling of hope and change are in the air, I am starting this blog to add another positive voice to the John Story Jenks School community. John Story Jenks is a vibrant community located in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. I had much anxiety about changing schools but have been very pleased these first 2 months at Jenks. I encourage other neighborhood families to visit Jenks and get to know the faculty, staff and students and I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised.

Here is a brief list of what Kindergarten has been doing thus far….

They have been working hard, having fun and are beginning to really get to know each other.

They write in journals everyday and are reading voraciously as they try to complete the 100 book challenge.

Believe it or not my daughter loves her homework and how wonderful to learn to love all aspects of school so young!

They are thrilled with their teachers, Ms. Tish and Ms. Donaldson and especially the student teacher, Ms. Colleen. I was surprised and pleased that they work with a different specialist each day.

I had the pleasure of going to Styer Orchard with the kids, where they picked apples and pumpkins and then made applesauce in class. My daughter’s favorite part of the trip was the pumpkin seeds that Ms. Colleen brought into class. They will be visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art next week. They also had a great time parading down Germantown Avenue on a beautiful Halloween afternoon.

Jenks’ students have also been involved in community events including Philadelphia Cares Day where volunteers from around the city helped to clean up the playground and school grounds. Students also helped sell pretzels and water at the Chestnut Hill Fall for the Arts Festival.

We are very happy with our decision to attend Jenks. We love Chestnut Hill and it’s feeling of a true neighborhood, so we decided to utilize and support one of the main cornerstones of many neighborhoods, the public school.
